Free rec league management software in Canada: what you actually get

What the free League Basic plan covers, where it stops, and prices in CAD.

If you run a small rec league in Canada, you probably don't want to pay a monthly fee just to post a schedule. My League Portal has a free plan, League Basic. It's free forever and doesn't need a card. Here's what it covers, where it stops, and when you'd be better off with something else.

What's free on League Basic

  • Up to 50 players
  • 1 admin (the owner)
  • 1 active season
  • 1 active drop-in session
  • Digital waivers (waiver text, accepted during sign-up)
  • A public registration page
  • 30-day history

You also get a public league home with the schedule, standings, teams, and news at one link, plus live scoring from the bench.

What Basic doesn't cover

  • More than 50 players. Pro covers up to 150.
  • Co-admins. Basic has just the owner. Pro allows up to 3 admins (you plus 2 co-admins).
  • More than one season or drop-in at a time. Pro allows 3 concurrent seasons and 10 active drop-in sessions.
  • Schedule upload. On Basic you add games one at a time. Spreadsheet and calendar-file upload are Pro and Enterprise only.
  • PDF waiver upload, custom themes, and your own domain. These are Pro features.
  • Video on the Stream tab. On Basic the tab stays visible but locked.
  • History past 30 days. Pro keeps 1 year.

Prices, in CAD

  • League Basic: free.
  • Pro: $19.99 CAD/month, or $13.99/month billed yearly ($167.92/yr), less if you pay for 6 months or a year (see pricing).
  • Enterprise: $99.99 CAD/month, or $69.99/month billed yearly ($839.92/yr), with a 30-day free trial and no card needed.

There are no setup fees, and you can pause a paid plan from Settings in the off-season.

When to pick something else

  • You need a native app with push notifications. My League Portal runs in the phone's browser. If you mostly need team RSVPs with push alerts, BenchApp, TeamSnap, or Spond may suit you better.
  • You run a large youth association with family accounts, many divisions, and email or text blasts. Tools built for youth sports organizations will probably fit better.
